Blogs, Vlogs and Everything In Between

Despite what many believe, blogging, vlogging and every other media just like them have played huge parts in our lives. To my generation, the first blogger was that dog from “Dog With a Blog” on Disney Channel and the first vlogger? None other than Teddy Duncan herself from “Good Luck Charlie.” Webinar legends Carly Shay and Sam Puckett walked so Brent Rivera could run. Whether we realize it or not, media forms like these had an impact on our lives growing up and continue to today.

While it isn’t the most prominent form of media in today’s society, blogging is actually thriving with 77% of internet users reading blogs (Charello, 2023). There are hundreds of different types of blogs for every type of person out there, from your usual food and fashion blogs to specific gaming and entertainment blogs. Another reason blogging has become popular is due in part to its role in marketing. Blogging has many benefits for marketers and their business, it allows them to reach larger audiences while also directly talking to specific target markets. Especially with the growing popularity of influencers, some marketers have found success with sending their products to be endorsed by these public figures.

Blogging isn't the only popular media in today's day and age, however. On the ups is podcasting along with different types of vlogging and webinars. After the COVID-19 pandemic left us all basically on house arrest, these different platforms allowed us to stay connected without actually having to be together. In fact, I bet I can give you PTSD in connection with one of these media types with just one single word: Zoom. Zoom was a type of webinar used throughout the pandemic and still to this day, to help companies and teams stay connected while at home. The screen mirroring allowed people to share their screen and present with things like PowerPoint and Google Slides. It was something everyone collectively hated more than the pandemic itself I would say.

Another major media type that has shot to popularity is vlogging. With almost all influencers today doing some sort of vlog type, it has led to a worldwide phenomenon. From GRWM’s (Get Ready With Me’s) to “A Day In the Life Of…” videos, vlogging has become a normal part of our everyday lives. You can walk down any aisle at Target, Sephora or Walmart and run into someone filming themselves, it’s become embedded into our society.

Like many other media types, blogging, vlogging, webinars and even podcasting have become staples in our everyday lives and will continue to do so with new Artificial Intelligence features and abilities. With all of this new technology coming, what kind of media type will be the next big hit?

  1. Good post Rileigh. Vlogging seems to be a recent form of major media. I feel as if the reason most major influencers implement vlogging into their platforms, is because their fans might want to know what a day in the life looks like, to see what they are wearing (GRWMs), or a multitude of other things.

  2. To answer your question, I think that there won't be a new type of media that is as big of a hit. I think that the existing types of media will just continue to develop and transform to fit new and upcoming trends. An example would be how vlogs changed from long YouTube videos to TikTok videos that are less than a minute. Also, I loved "Good Luck Charlie" growing up and Teddy was probably the first vlogger I ever watched!
