Sophomore Shenanigans: A Training Tale

Image
Last week during our final week of sprin g training each class got to lead a practice. We each had a specific day we would be running training. The freshmen ran Tuesday’s training, the sophomores ran Wednesday and the juniors and fifth years finished off the week running training on Thursday. I was so excited to get to create the practice plan and I personally think the sophomores had the best training out of everyone else. It’s safe to say we really got into it. We created and printed out replicas of the papers our coach uses and even organized the drills the same way he does. However, the drills we ran were nothing like the ones he ran during the season. Instead, we played fun games the entire time. We started out with probably the best game of the entire training. It doesn’t really have a name so we just called it the communication game. And let me tell you, it was nothing short of one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Everyone partners up and while one partner is blindfolde...

Cole Palmer, the Man That You Are

Image
For a few years now Chelsea Football Club has been, in nicer terms, a complete and utter disappointment. They’ve been a disaster, like a dumpster fire bad. Ever since the ownership crisis in 2022 left the club in the hands of a greedy man who knows nothing about the sport, Chelsea has fallen on a swift demise. Failing to qualify for the Champions League, spending a record €435.5 million ($4.65 million) on underperforming players, manager changes every month and being unable to crack into the top 10 of the Premier League Table. Not to mention the full roster worth of players on injured reserve just on a rotation. You name the problem, Chelsea has it covered. For a while, it seemed like life was never going to get better.      Enter Cole Palmer. The 21-year-old midfielder is, as Foreigner would say, as cold as ice. Since transferring from Manchester City on Sept. 1, 2023, Palmer has carried the Chelsea franchise on his back. He’s scored 23 goals with 13 ...

Ohio Northern Women's Soccer Spring Game Preview

Image
On Saturday, April 20th, the Ohio Northern Women’s Soccer team will be taking a trip up to Findlay, Ohio to face The University of Findlay in their Spring exhibition game. Findlay is led by a new head coach and former ONU assistant coach Sierra Perry while second-year head coach Ben Tierney leads the Bears.       Findlay, 11-5-4 overall, made a strong run in G-MAC conference play last season, tying the No. 1 team in the nation, Ashland University, twice to secure a spot in the conference tournament. Ohio Northern, 10-9-1 overall, made an incredible run in their conference play, securing a No. 4 seed and upsetting rivals Otterbein University to make it to the conference tournament finals for the ninth season in a row. Both teams faced a tough ending to their Fall seasons, Findlay falling to Northwood University in the conference semi-final and ONU taking a crushing 2-1 defeat to John Carroll University in the conference finals....

Educate Yourself: National Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2024

Image
The week of Feb. 26th through March 3rd is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and while I haven’t ever been diagnosed with an eating disorder myself I believe that bringing awareness to this cause is extremely important. National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) is an annual campaign targeted at educating the public about eating disorders and providing hope for friends, families and those struggling with a disorder themselves. I have watched as many of my teammates, friends and loved ones have struggled with disordered eating and it’s something no one should ever have to go through.      Being a female athlete, however, eating disorders are unfortunately not hard to come by. 42% of female athletes have been diagnosed with an eating disorder while 70% have engaged in behaviors that can lead to a disorder. Actions such as restricting their eating or overworking their bodies are prime examples. Athletes in sports that focus ...

Four Tips to Help You in the College Sports Recruiting Process

Image
Every week I have to read a chapter from the textbook for my Principles of Social Media course so we can discuss it in class. This week the chapter was all about how to create your own personal brand. There were so many steps and rules to follow but for me, it all felt normal, like I had already known this information for some reason. Was it because I grew up in a social media-heavy era? Was I just that social media savvy? Then it hit me. It all seemed normal to me because I had already been creating my personal brand and practicing those tips while going through the recruiting process. While it may not seem like being recruited for college sports and going through an interview process are even remotely the same thing in some ways they are. I had no clue what to do when I was being recruited. I didn’t know how to contact coaches, where to go for identification or “ID” camps or what I was doing period. Going through the recruiting process can be very daunting so I tho...
