Lonely Hearts Dinner: A Single Person’s Guide to Valentine’s Day

If you’re like me and you’ll be single this Valentine’s Day, I have the perfect recipes for you. While every couple on God’s green Earth will be dressing up for a fancy night on the town and spending a fortune worth on “love,” we single people will be enjoying the peace and quiet, doing whatever the heck we want to. Just because we’re single, however, doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the Hallmark-invented holiday. As the wise Ron Swanson once said, “People are idiots, Leslie.” So, in honor of this commercialized celebration, here are some ideas for the perfect Lonely Hearts dinner.

        Homemade Bagel Bites

Start to finish: 30 minutes

Servings: 12

No heart-shaped pizzas here, people. None of that stuff. Instead, make homemade bagel bites. This fun alternative is super quick and easy to make! No more compromising on toppings, splitting the bill or leaving hungry. This recipe allows you to create your ideal meal just the way you want it. What toppings will you choose? Pepperoni? Olives? Or will you go the Kevin McCallister route?

Ingredients:

1 bag of Mini Bagels (6 bagels)

1 jar of Pizza Sauce

1 bag of Shredded mozzarella

Toppings of your choice

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F.

  2. Split each bagel into halves and lie them evenly spread out atop a sheet pan.

  3. With a spoon, cover the tops of the bagel halves with your pizza sauce.

  4. Once that’s complete, go in and cover the sauce with your shredded mozzarella.

  5. Finally, add your toppings. If needed, cut your toppings until they’re small enough to fit on the mini bagels.

  6. Repeat this process to ensure maximum taste.

  7. Bake until cheese is bubbling or lightly browned, 10-12 minutes.

  8. After taking the pan out of the oven, allow the mini bagels to cool.

  9. Enjoy.

       Strawberry Crack Bar

          Start to finish: 90 minutes

          Servings: 10-12

Instead of eating red and pink chocolate-covered strawberries made in a factory, make some strawberry crack bar instead. This healthier alternative is perfect for a nice snack or sweet dessert while also allowing you to blow off some steam. With just five simple ingredients, this sweet treat will make your day sweeter than any person ever could.

Ingredients:

1 box of Fresh strawberries

2 cups of Chocolate chips

2 teaspoons of Vegetable oil

1 jar of Peanut butter

Sea salt

Directions:

  1. Place a baking sheet down on top of a hard surface.

  2. With a cutting board, slice your strawberries from top to bottom into slivers. Be careful not to make them too thin.

  3. Lay the sliced berries face down alternating the directions, fixing them like puzzle pieces. It’s easiest when the top row starts with the bottom up.

  4. Next, add 3-4 spoonfuls of peanut butter into a microwave-safe bowl. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil as well. Microwave for 1 minute. After that 1 minute, take the bowl out, stir it up and place it back in for another minute. Repeat this until the mixture is melted enough to pour over.

  5. Taking your bowl full of melted peanut butter, pour it over the strawberries making sure to distribute it equally. You can use a knife or spoon to help spread out the peanut butter.

  6. On a baking sheet, place the berries in the freezer for 15 minutes or until chilled.

  7. In another microwave-safe bowl pour in 2 cups of chocolate chips. Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil. Microwave for 1 minute. Just as you did with the peanut butter, take the bowl out and stir until melted enough to pour.

  8. Take the berries out of the freezer. They shouldn’t be rock hard but they also shouldn’t be flimsy and moving around on the baking sheet.

  9. Take your melted chocolate and pour it on top of the peanut butter spreading it evenly. Use a knife or spoon to help distribute it.

  10. While the chocolate is still melted, sprinkle sea salt on top of the berries.

  11. Place the berries back into the freezer for 30-45 minutes or until solid.

  12. Take the dessert out of the freezer and place it on a solid surface.

  13. With a knife, begin to break apart the bar into whatever-sized pieces you wish.

  14. Enjoy.

        Candy Salad

Start to finish: 10 minutes

Servings: 1

Trending on TikTok, this alternative is the perfect side to your meal without the hassle of asking for dressing on the side or removing the tomatoes. This mixture of pure happiness is sweeter than a sugar-coated compliment from your Aunt Tina. While your liver may need to work overtime, one night won’t hurt when it comes to this concoction.

Ingredients:

Multiple bags of your favorite candy in mini form.

Directions:

        1. In a massive bowl or container, empty out all of the bags of your favorite candies.

        2. Mix the candies. You can even go as far as tossing it with salad tongs.

        3. Enjoy.

        Your Local Fast-Food Chain

Start to finish: N/A

Servings: 1

Hate to cook? Hate to spend excessive amounts of money on things that don't matter? Hate dressing up? Boy, do I have the perfect solution for you. This simple, casual, cost-efficient alternative to a night out on the town will become your favorite new tradition of the year.

Ingredients:

A car. Or a phone with a food delivery service.

A comfy outfit.

Directions:

  1. If you have a car and are a licensed driver, get in the car.

  2. Drive to your favorite fast-food restaurant. I recommend Chipotle, Chick-fil-A or Noodles & Company.

  3. Order your favorite meal.

  4. Check and make sure everything in the order is correct. (The last thing you want is for the restaurant to forget your fries!)

  5. Drive home.

  6. Enjoy.

  1. If you don’t have a car or a license to drive, open your food delivery service app.

  2. Order from your favorite fast-food restaurant.

  3. Wait for it to be delivered.

  4. Check and make sure everything is correct when it arrives.

  5. Enjoy.

  4. I love these recipes! Being single on Valentine's Day sure isn't easy so I completely relate to what you were saying! It gets exhausting seeing all the Valentine's posts on Instagram, lol! These recipes are so cool. I think my favorite is the bagel bites one. Growing up those were always my comfort food so I might have to try to make them! Thanks for the recommendation!
